Monroe's motto is “Where Heartland Meets High Tech.” It grew as a trading center for the surrounding Piedmont farm country and today has a walkable historic downtown: Main Street and Franklin Street, the Union County Courthouse, a downtown historic district and a residential historic district, both on the National Register of Historic Places. New neighborhoods are spreading toward the Monroe Expressway.

Getting around / commute

  • Downtown Monroe is about 25 miles southeast of Uptown Charlotte.
  • US 74 runs east–west through the city: the free surface route through Monroe, Indian Trail and Matthews, becoming Independence Boulevard in Charlotte. US 601 runs north–south. NC 75, NC 200 and NC 207 also serve the city.
  • The Monroe Expressway (US 74 Bypass) is an all-electronic toll road, 18 miles long, from US 74 near I-485 in Mecklenburg County to US 74 between Wingate and Marshville. It opened November 27, 2018. NCDOT projects about a 20-minute time savings for a Marshville-to-Matthews trip. Monroe Expressway — NCDOT
  • As of January 1, 2026, a full-length trip costs $2.96 for an NC Quick Pass account in a two-axle vehicle. Paying by mailed invoice costs more; an NC Quick Pass account saves 50% versus the invoice rate. NC Quick Pass toll information
  • Charlotte–Monroe Executive Airport is about 5 miles northwest of the city; Charlotte Douglas International Airport is about 37 miles northwest.
