Belmont sits on a peninsula formed by the Catawba River and the South Fork Catawba River, two arms of Lake Wylie. The area was once known as Garibaldi Station, after the railroad stop built in the early 1870s; it was renamed Belmont in 1883 for New York banker August Belmont. Chronicle Mills, organized in 1901, began Belmont's growth as a textile center, with nearly twenty mills built by 1930.
