Gastonia is the county seat and most populous city in Gaston County and the 13th-most populous city in North Carolina. It is named for William Gaston, a jurist and U.S. Representative from North Carolina, and grew as a textile center; the Loray Mill strike of 1929 became a key event in the labor movement.

Cramerton, seven miles east of Gastonia, is bisected by the South Fork Catawba River. It was founded in 1906 as Mayesworth; textile engineer Stuart W. Cramer turned it into a model mill village and renamed it Cramerton in 1921 — the term "air conditioning" is attributed to him.

Stanley is one of Gaston County's oldest communities, with roots in the 1700s; its railroad depot, Brevard's Station, was a departure point for soldiers during the Civil War.
